General

This is a co-educational school with 106 pupils.
Our principal is a teaching principal.
Four teachers are classroom teachers.
There are two full time teachers on the Special Education Team (SET).
There are four Special Needs Assistants (SNAs).
There is an administration office available from 9am – 3pm
Generally pupils begin school when they are four years old and transfer to secondary school when they are twelve years old.

School Rules

The school rules are drawn up in accordance with the rules and directives of the Department of education and Skills, and Education Act of 1998.

School Hours

The Abbeyleix South National School opens to receive pupils at 9.00 a.m. when official supervision of pupils begins. No pupil should be left on his / her own before the arrival of a staff member. The Board of Management will not be responsible for pupils who arrive before 9.00 a.m.

School finishes for the Infant classes. Parents are requested to come to the classroom patio door to collect their children.

School finishes for all other pupils (1st to 6th Class)

Please note: The Junior Infant pupils go home at the earlier time of 12.30 p.m. for their first two weeks of school.

Pupils are requested, for their own safety, to walk with the teachers on duty to the new school avenue where they then get their transport or else walk with their collector to the church avenue.

During school hours no pupil may leave the school for any purpose without the permission of the Principal and must be accompanied by an adult. Breaking this rule will be considered a serious offence.

Ethos

Abbeyleix South National School is a Church of Ireland Parish School under the Patronage of the Church of Ireland Bishop of Cashel and Ossory. Our school is a vibrant, friendly, exciting and happy place of learning. The staff of our school aims to create an atmosphere where all pupils are equally valued and respected. We endeavour to establish and maintain high standards of behaviour, discipline and achievement. Our pupils experience a sense of caring and belonging and are encouraged to reach their full potential. We believe education is about developing the whole person, giving them life-long skills and preparing them to participate as good citizens in an ever-changing society. Of paramount importance is the happiness of each child under our care.

History

In 1843 Abbeyleix South National School, one of the town’s landmark buildings opened its doors to local children. 168 years later, on the 1st September 2011, we moved into our brand new, bright, modern, state-of-the art four classroom school. It is only when you walk into the school that you realise the powerful nature of its setting. We are privileged that our school is located in close proximity to a woodland, which enables our pupils to develop a love of nature and an appreciation of their environment.
