Visit from Sharon Shannon

Pupils over the years in Abbeyleix South National school have enjoyed listening and responding to the music of Sharon Shannon in music class, a wonderfully gifted and naturally talented musician. Her musical abilities are world renowned and she is a much sought-after performer across the globe having performed in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Our 3rd and 4th class have just finished an extensive study of some of her best-known tunes. We then followed up on this study by writing to the musician herself, and from here our letters journey began.  We had to find her address, if all else failed Mrs Wallace was going to try and personally present them at an upcoming concert.

We contacted her Facebook page after Mr Wallace consulted with an industry contact and waited patiently for a reply. In the meantime, with thanks to Deirdre Seale who through her myriad of contacts obtained Sharon’s address, the letters were on their way.

Over the following weekend the most fantastic message arrived on Facebook. Sharon Shannon replied and said that she had received the 3rd and 4th class letters and they were so, so sweet!

The most amazing news is that she had offered to come to meet us, play for us, play with us and answer any questions the children may have. Her time was extremely limited as she was performing at a venue that evening, but we were so appreciative that she has found the time to visit our school.

Sharon Shannon would be coming to our school on Friday the Friday 17th January 2020, we were all so excited we couldn’t wait.

The children all made handmade banners of welcome.

The children, teachers and parents lined the avenue to the school to welcome her. The screams of excitement as she arrived reached even higher levels when Sharon and her team walked down greeting everyone as she arrived.

We then moved to the G.P. Hall that was brightly decorated for Sharons visit.

All classes from juniors to 6th performed with her. While she played some of her best known tunes

Then students in our school who are members of Spink Comhaltas had the opportunity to have a little seisíun with her also.

We then moved to Mrs Wallace’s room where she met the pupils who wrote the letters that captured her attention, they asked questions, took photos and went autograph hunting. two of our pupils also had a chance to play individually with her.

Our time with Sharon Shannon sadly had to come to an end. We loved having her visit Abbeyleix South National School and appreciate her giving us so much time from her busy schedule. As a little thank you we presented her with a basket of beautiful cupcakes from Wendys Cakes.

Thank you Sharon for a fabulous memory for our staff, students and parents.

PowerPoint Presentation on Entente Florale Europe 2017

Thank you to Mary White who visited 3rd and 4th class on Wednesday 2nd May to show them slides relating to Abbeyleix’s entry in The Entente Florale Competition 2017. Mary gave the pupils a great insight into what the competition involved for the whole town and she talked with the pupils on the importance of biodiversity. Third and Fourth Class met with Mary the previous Friday as part of the Spring Clean Laois week. We are all very aware of the huge part Mary plays in the community. We were thrilled to have her visit our school to help educate our pupils on the importance of playing their part in the community.

Fields of Life Donation

Mrs Wallaces Third and Fourth class hosted a pop up restaurant in April. Parents were treated to a beautiful sit down meal in an unrecognisable GP Room. The mood was set with beautiful lighting and background music while the children worked busily serving their nearest and dearest.

The students donated the funds they raised from this evening to the Fields of Life charity.

Wendy and Eamon Cahill received the donation on behalf of Fields of Life. Please read Wendy and Eamons letter below.

Many thanks to 3rd and 4th class for your wonderful donation to Fields of Life from fundraising at your pop up restaurant. We are very grateful and assure you it will go along way in Uganda to helping school children in Education and bringing life changing clean water to communities. We had the privilege of visiting Uganda this Easter to learn more about the work of Fields of Life. To date they have built 117 schools in East Africa which are educating more that 50,000 children and drilled more than 670 wells providing water to c. 650,000 villagers. We had the pleasure of opening 2 such wells while we were there and it was wonderful to see first hand how clean water was be able to take away disease, allow children to collect water in safety (as they are not walking miles on lonely roads), and also allow the children to attend school again because they are not spending hours walking to collect water from dirty waterholes. If children can be educated they have a chance to bring about lasting change and break the cycle of poverty. We loved the hope we saw through the different programmes in place.

Again heartfelt thanks for your generosity.

Family Fun Day

On Sunday the 29th April 2018 we had our annual Family Fun Day. It was a break from the tradition of holding it in June on the school grounds. We would like to thank Liz and Canice Farrell and their family for hosting our day at the picturesque location of Knockatrina Stud.

Our Family Fun Day coincided with the annual blooming of the Bluebells in adjacent Knockatrina Wood, part of Leafy Loop walk in Durrow, Laois. See trail map for Leafy Loop

Our day started with a wonderful service in St Michael’s and All Angels Church in Abbeyleix. The families then all met up at Knockatrina Stud where the Farrell family had organised parking and picnic facilities. After the adventure of the walk in the woods it was time for a picnic and the start of our games.

We had running races, egg and spoon races and sack races with little prizes for participants.
