We love our break and lunch times in the playground but when we are unable to go out due to the rain,we have great fun in the classroom playing chess and building Jenga blocks.

All about light!
In First and Second class have been all about light!
We had a big discussion about light, the different types of light, where light comes
from, etc. We completed concept maps all about light, in pairs.
We learned how to make a rainbow using a torch, a container with some water in
it, a mirror and a sheet of white card.

Outdoor Classroom
Work on our outdoor classroom began on the 22nd of May 2017. The space required a lot of care and attention to become what it is today this was with the assistance of parents from the school. This is in preparation for our Fifth Green Flag for Biodiversity as well as preparations for the Entente Florale Competition which Abbeyleix is partaking in this July.
First the area had to be cleared and made safe.
Then work began on creating bug hotels, seating areas, flower beds and butterfly garden.

Cookery Class – Quiche Lorraine
Third and Fourth Class really enjoyed learning how to make Quiche Lorraine. They also enjoyed sampling their cooking!Teacher made mini quiches at home which we all enjoyed for lunch. What a simple recipe! Tasty too!
Third and Fourth Class Orienteering
We headed down the woods to do some orienteering today. We had a fabulous time and the woods were magical!
Teacher put us into pairs and we had to find ten control cards and record the symbol found on each card.Then we returned to base to check our answers.
It was such a fun P.E. class and we hope to do some more orienteering soon again. Many thanks to Ciara Delaney for facilitating.

Abbeyleix South National School
” A brief history”
Abbeyleix South National School was built in 1843 by Lord de Vesci to serve the Church of Ireland population in the area. The school is a co-educational school under the patronage of the Church of Ireland Bishop of Ossory and Leighlin Diocese. The town of Abbeyleix is sited on a carboniferous limestone basin, therefore the school is built with limestone. It is situated adjacent to the parish church in the southern outskirts of the town.
As the population grew, the one classroom building of 1843 was extended in 1893. During the 1950’s the layout of the school was slightly changed again. . As a building of architectural merit it makes a valuable contribution to the town which has been designated as an Architectural Heritage Centre by the E.U. At present contractors have tendered for the building of a new four teacher school.
At present the school has a current enrolment of 99 pupils comprising of boys and girls who reside in the immediate area and in Durrow, Attanagh, Killermogh, Ballyroan, Ballinakill and Ballacolla which are within a six mile radius of the school. On 16th February 2010 we were given the go ahead by the Department of Education and Science to proceed to stage 2b Tender and Construction of the New Abbeyleix South National School. The plan includes 4 classrooms with WC in each room, a General Purpose Room, Teachers and Staff Room, Admin/General Office, Resource Room, Library, Multi-purpose Room / servery, a Universal Access W.C and Shower and P.E. store.
The school has , in the past, participated in many enviornment projects run by Laois County Council’s Enviornment Awareness Office.We have now been designated a litter free school in The tidy Primary Schools’ Competition. The pupils of the school are aware of their responsibility to care for and keep their part of the local enviornment litter free.

On Monday, 30th April, 2012 Bishop Michael Burrows officially opened The New Abbeyleix South National School.
